Decontamination and Decommissioning Technical Support

Our experience in the area of decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) support has been gained through the Three Mile Island 2 accident recovery and cleanup plus D&D of a 100Mw experimental Boiling Water Reactor, several research and manufacturing reactors/facilities, hot cells and glove-boxes. The staff is also experienced in the management of major radioactive land remediation projects involving radium and uranium. This experience with nuclear D&D projects in Europe, Puerto Rico and the continental United States for both DOE and the commercial sector is applicable but not limited to:
  • Plant/site radiological characterization
  • Decommissioning planning
  • Decommissioning engineering
  • Decontamination, dismantlement, size reduction and disposal/recycle of plant components
  • Land remediation

AAC personnel are experienced in the development and performance of comprehensive site characterization efforts that accurately define the site D&D requirements and radiological obstacles.

Based on years of hands on experience, the AAC staff can prepare D&D project plans and schedules developed to efficiently define the project's work flow and insure budget optimization.

Our D&D engineering team’s experience and full understanding of lessons learned from previous projects has been vital in the application of D&D techniques with proven effectiveness and thus insuring successful completion of projects on schedule and within budget.

AAC can provide D&D project support in:

  • Site characterization, decommissioning planning and safety analysis
  • Health Physics staffing
  • Waste minimization and waste management support for the D&D of nuclear facilities
  • Engineering, technical and management support of D&D activities for reactors, glove boxes, hot cells and other radioactive facilities
  • Waste management evaluations and assessment of packaging/disposal options for radwaste, equipment and piping from D&D efforts
  • Program and project plans for equipment dismantling
  • Cost estimates for specialized D&D activities and waste processing
  • Environmental Safety and Health oversight
  • Site characterization and environmental impact statements
  • Environmental laboratory staff augmentation services
  • Licensing and regulatory support
  • Human resource and staffing plans
  • Radiological, ALARA and environmental engineering
